Agnes Elliott, mother of Nancy Linn Shaver, was a daughter of The Rev John Elliott, a descendant of John Elliott, of Manton, England, who came to America in 1753, and served in the Revolutionary War as a major. Agnes was born in Cumberland County early enough to have been threatened by Indian attacks. Her brother John, narrowly escaped being scalped by an Indian who was chasing him at close range with raised tomahawk. Just keeping a few steps ahead of the Indian, he managed to load his musket while running, jammed a bullet and, turning quickly, he shot the Indian in the chest. The Indian turned and fled. Another brother, William, was classified as a "determined patriot" at Bullock Run, now the Borough of Wilkinsburg. On January 15, 1818 Agnes Elliott was married to The Rev John Linn
and died a month after the birth of their only child, Nancy. She died
December 21, 1818. Return to Nancy Elliott Linn Return to Rev David Shaver See also sketches of Nancy Elliott Linn's mother, Agnes Elliott, her father, the Rev John Linn, and John Linn's second wife, Mary McClure. |
