Elizabeth (Betty) married our third son, but our fifth child, Hayward.
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Guy Olsen, she was born in Allegheny
County. While a young girl her parents moved to a new borough, Forest
Hills, adjoining the borough of East Pittsburgh, where she obtained
her public school education. While a member of Union High School,
Turtle Creek, she and our son, Hayward became school days sweethearts,
which eventually led to marriage . They were married November 9, 1940,
her twentieth birthday, in Wilkinsburg, Pa.
Her earliest American ancestor, on the paternal side, was a member
of the Continental army during the Revolutionary War, he having come
from Norway a few years previous. He served as a Private in the York
County Militia.
Betty is of a happy-go-lucky disposition, contrasting from the quiet
and serious attitude of her husband, but the two different dispositions
dovetail into a happy and cheerful family. Three children bless their
home: John Hayward, a High School Junior [in
1958], Kathryn Susan and Michael George Shaver.
