Thus, a certain version of the Germani developed about 500 years ago that has little to do with the many different Germanic tribes that existed historically: that the Germani were early Germans; that whatever Tacitus said about the Germani could be consistently applied to contemporary Germans; that Herman the Cherusker was the first German hero; that whatever was German was good; that evil enemies changed as required – first the Romans played this role, then the French, then the Roman Catholic Church, and most recently, the Jews. It was always some dangerous and fatal opponent; the humanists planted these seeds that bore their horrible fruit in later centuries. |
