The false equation ‘the Germani = the Germans’ | <table of contents> <previous page> <next page> page 2 of 3 |

For them, the Germani became the “first Germans,” the primordial mother and father of all Germans. All that they learned about the Germani became ancient, pure and even prototypically German. Anything French or Italian, on the other hand, represented the tradition of ancient Rome, which the free Germani had always rejected. Ulrich of Hutton, knight, scholar, poet, and dealer in political influence, declared chieftain and Roman officer Arminius the first German hero, “who was the greatest and strongest in all the world, and who rescued not only the fatherland, but also Germani and Germans everywhere at the precise time when Rome was at its peak in wealth and power. Herman spat out the Romans and nobly plowed them under.” The German humanists also came up with the notion that the German name Herman could be used to translate the Roman name Arminius - without any linguistic justification. |
