Meanwhile the German tribes between the Rhine and the Elbe had won their freedom. Also, even though Roman Legions drove through their territory on missions of reprisal a few years later, the great goal of establishing a province in the area was abandoned. This had far reaching consequences for the Germany and Europe that was to come: The constant Roman influence which took place in Gall did not take place east of the Rhine. As a result, there is in central Europe both the Romance languages, like French, as well as Germanic languages, like German and Dutch. The Germanic tribes to the west remained constant and change occurred within the culture. However, if they were no longer subject to Roman domination, they remained nevertheless unthinkable without Rome. And so, though the Romans came no more to the Germanic tribes, but the Germanic tribes came to the Roman Empire.
