In addition, the remains of a drawn wagon, and even the remains of the animal itself, was preserved over the millennia. There was an especially valuable find, an iron face mask, originally covered with silver, which was worn as armor over the face. It apparently did not become booty because it was covered by a part of the rampart that had collapsed. The site reveals the how dramatic was the battle. Up to this point in the battle, a Roman officer had led his men into battle from on high. But it came to nothing: His splendid mask became rubble. And it remained as an emblem of the despair of war. Meanwhile, the remains of human bones were also found at Kalkriese.

Now, archaeological dating of this site is exactly the year 9. Therefore, there can be no doubt: Kalkriese represents at least part of the battle called the battle of Teutoberg Forest. In the future, archaeology will no doubt find other sites and many other surprises.
