The Celts came into the picture with the Ice Age. They were experts at producing iron products, from swords to jewelry and their master crafts became sought-after luxury goods. The tribes in Northern Germany and Southern Scandinavia could not compete with these goods, or they were hundreds of years behind in the ability to mine ore and process it at the level of Celtic standards. And so, the closer to the Rhine and the Danube rivers, the greater is the Celtic influence. However, the influence is clearly seen even far into the north, around Jutland and on the Danish islands. Celtic master works have been found there, a vehicle probably used in worship and a precious kettle. Also, probably due to Celtic influence, a chieftain class developed among the poor agricultural tribes to the north and east. The remains of villages reveal a characteristic still identifiable after many centuries: Prominent among the usual huts, archaeologists also find a large house where the village chieftain and his family lived. |
