Similar relationships existed two thousand years ago: Those speaking a Germanic language certainly were able to understand one another. The ongoing progression to a single language had just begun. However, this linguistic commonality did not lead to a self-consciously unified society. On the contrary, too often the tribes quarreled, and they were drawn together more by considerations of war than by the necessities of peace. Alignment of prestigious groups who had maintained a “Kernel of Tradition” did not result from feelings of community, but rather from the desire for renown, riches, and power – or to put it in a more profane way – loot, money and land.
