From the comparatively underdeveloped and foot-free men and women of an antique border culture the ideologues of National Socialism cobbled together a “Germanic race,” who was strapped with a blood-and-land ideology that paraded the virtue of cultivating of the crops, the clan and the clod. In this context there was no mention of the brutal tribal warfare at the time of Arminius. On the contrary, the Germani were praised for their high culture and freely compared to the Greeks and the Romans. After 1933 the Nazis developed a pseudo-science of racial doctrine, which was used to justify the murder of millions of human beings. At the pinnacle of the “great German Empire” stood Adolf Hitler, with “leader of all Germani” as one of his “honorary titles.” The capital of the future German Empire was supposed to be “Germania,” located in the city of Berlin, reshaped and renamed by megalomania.

The so-called Germani-ideology, which had developed starting with the humanists, found its horrible peak with the notion of the “thousand year empire,” an empire which lasted far too long after just 12 years. This German-Germani had scarcely more than the name in common with the conglomerate of people and tribes in early Northern Europe. That the Germani fell into discredit after 1945 is only too understandable. Still, many specialists and so-called experts in German – Germanists, archaeologists and historians – are often only too ready to become entranced by the Germani racial dance.
